Project Basho provides not only production space and resources for photographers, but it is our mission to provide opportunities for those interested in learning the rich and intricate medium of photography.

Classes are intended for a wide range audiences: from complete beginners to those who have some knowledge but lack practice in recent years, as well as for those who want to further develop their craft and sense of vision. These classes are small and practice-oriented, so that each student can get enough attention and appropriate advice from instructors.

Since the approach of the classes is holistic, emphasis will be placed on gaining practical knowledge as well as understanding of the aesthetics and history of photography. There will be a series of critiques where students are expected to show their work for various assignments. Students will also be exposed to a wide range of photographic expressions through slide lectures on historical and contemporary works as well as through visiting museums and galleries of photography shows.

The nude is a timeless subject that has been interpreted through every artistic medium. In this workshop, participants will engage the two most basic elements of photography: light and form. Paying attention to gesture, shadow, negative space, and composition, students will explore the endless creative possibilities of representing the human form as well as the directorial role of the photographer working with a model.

Ken Collins – Sat & Sun, August 6 & 7

This workshop introduces the use of large format cameras with particular emphasis on photographing people. Collins will combine technical instruction on operating a view camera with demonstrations of dramatic studio lighting techniques and practice directing subjects. Students will leave with the skills, techniques, and experience to make deliberate and compelling portraits.

Ed Kashi – Sat & Sun, August 13 & 14

World renowned photojournalist Ed Kashi will lead a two day workshop examining the creative and professional developments in the field of documentary photography. In addition to critique aimed at sharpening participants' personal vision, Kashi will also provide students with strategies for developing an idea into a full scale project and getting their work seen by the public.

Arlene Collins – Sat & Sun, September 10 & 11
