Project Basho provides not only production space and resources for photographers, but it is our mission to provide opportunities for those interested in learning the rich and intricate medium of photography.

Classes are intended for a wide range audiences: from complete beginners to those who have some knowledge but lack practice in recent years, as well as for those who want to further develop their craft and sense of vision. These classes are small and practice-oriented, so that each student can get enough attention and appropriate advice from instructors.

Since the approach of the classes is holistic, emphasis will be placed on gaining practical knowledge as well as understanding of the aesthetics and history of photography. There will be a series of critiques where students are expected to show their work for various assignments. Students will also be exposed to a wide range of photographic expressions through slide lectures on historical and contemporary works as well as through visiting museums and galleries of photography shows.

Terry Fowler, Introductory Photography Class, Beginner Photo Class, Photography Classes in Philadelphia, PA
Mondays, September 27 – December 6

In Photographic Vision I and Photographic Vision Digital I, students are introduced to photography as a unique way to engage with the world around them. These 11-week introductory courses focus on the fundamentals of photography including camera operation, calculating exposure, and printing, while encouraging students to look at their surroundings with a more keen and reflective eye. By paying close attention to elements like light, composition, and perspective, students will be pushed to find new ways of seeing.

Craig Barber – Sat & Sun, October 2 & 3

This weekend workshop is for students that are interested in reevaluating the conventions of landscape photography. Participants will be encouraged to examine the ways a landscape is changed by the society which inhabits it, and conversely, how culture is influenced by the environment in which it exists. Instructor Craig Barber will push participants to go beyond objective documentation of a location to instead investigate the relationship between their personal artistic style and the emotional and psychological feel of a place.

Bill Schwab – Fri, Sat & Sun, Oct 1, 2 & 3

The excellent resolution and beautiful aesthetic quality of wet plate collodion make it well worth the required effort, however, the hands-on nature of the process usually requires photographers to shoot in a studio where they can quickly prepare and process their plates. In this intermediate level workshop, Bill Schwab will shatter this limitation by introducing the use of a trailer-hitch darkroom and portable darkboxes. Participants will gain hands-on experience working in the field and will learn what it takes to bring wet plate collodion out of the studio and into the real world.
