This course is for beginners seeking to attain a basic introduction to photography, from operating a 35 mm manual camera to black-and-white darkroom practices. Topics will include techniques for proper exposure, principles of composition, and understanding lighting. Film processing and printing will be emphasized throughout the course.

While students will learn technical skills, they are also encouraged to explore the aesthetics of photographic expression through assignments and slide lectures on contemporary and historical work.

In addition to class sessions, students are strongly encouraged to attend optional shooting trips as well as museum and gallery visits.

Class Fee:
  • $525 + lab fee of $100
  • Now students have access to our facility outside of class time for the duration of course! Come practice what you learned!
Materials Needed:
  • 35mm SLR camera and 50mm lens
  • 35mm Film (Kodak Tri-X or Ilford HP5+)
  • 8" x 10" RC paper (Ilford Multigrade: Pearl)
  • Negative sleeves (PrintFile 35-7B or equivalent)
  • A pair of scissors
  • An apron (optional)
Instructor:

Brandon Jones is an interdisciplinary artist and photographer originally from Atlanta, GA. Brandon received a dual BFA in Photography and Painting from the University of Georgia and an MFA in Photography from Tyler School of Art. He has studied in Rome and Tokyo and has shown in group exhibitions in Philadelphia; Atlanta; Pingyao, China; and Tokyo. His work is included in several permanent collections, including the Rare Books and Manuscripts Collection at Beinecke Library, Yale University. While his primary focus is photography, Brandon has also worked extensively with design, painting, collage, video, sound, music, and installation.
