Exploring the Pine Barrens

Spend a day photographing the cranberry bogs, rivers, ponds, wetlands, Atlantic cedar swamps, pine forests, plants and wildlife of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. We will discuss cameras, settings, equipment, lenses, techniques, as well as tips for attracting wildlife to your lens and how to scout out prime photographic locations. Students will also learn about the unique ecology and history of the area. On Sunday, the group will reconvene at our studio for processing and group critique. A portion of the workshop fee will be donated to the New Jersey Conservation Foundation.

About the Location:

In 2003 the New Jersey Conservation Foundation purchased the 9,400-acre Franklin Parker Preserve, the largest private land conservation acquisition in state history. Today, NJCF owns and manages the 14-square-mile property in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. The site contains habitat for more than 50 rare plants and animals including native orchids and the bald eagle.

Photographic Vision Digital I, Intro to Digital SLR, or portfolio review

Instructor:

Michael Hogan studied photography at the University of the Arts, Continuing Studies Program, under Jack Carnell and John Carlano. He has been photographing the Pine Barrens with his view camera for 30 years. His landscape photographs are in the collections of Johnson and Johnson, The Pew Charitable Trust, The John Templeton Foundation, McGraw Hill and many other public and private collections. Plexus Books published "The Natural Wonders of the Jersey Pines and Shore" in 2005 which includes 200 of his photographs. He also works with many of New Jersey's conservation groups including the New Jersey Conservation Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, The Pinelands Preservation Alliance and The South Jersey Land and Water Trust and has lead many workshops and hikes throughout Southern New Jersey.
