Photographic Vision II

- Developing a personal vision and refining the image-making process

Kelly Donovan
Description:

In this intermediate course students polish their creative and technical skills in black and white photography. Students delve into personal expression and composition, and the flow from exposure, to film development, to the finished print. Students spend most of their time in the darkroom refining their printing skills, experimenting with toners, and exploring different fiber-based papers.

Through slide lectures, assignments, and critiques, students are challenged to develop both their skill set and style.

There are several shooting trips and museum and gallery visits over the course of the class. Although these are not mandatory, students are encouraged to attend.

Instructor: Tsuyoshi Ito was raised in Tokyo and moved to Philadelphia in his early 20s to attend Temple University. Noticing a void in the city's photographic community, Ito founded Project Basho in 2002 to provide photography classes and darkroom space for working artists. He continues to develop this program which now includes digital facilities, exhibitions, events, and weekend workshops. Having worked commercially for years, Ito is an experienced printer and is particularly interested in historical processes as well as techniques that bridge the old and the new.
