This workshop introduces students to making prints with the historic carbon transfer process. Students will become familiar with the required materials and will learn what makes a good negative for carbon printing. The workshop also provides detailed instruction on how to sensitize, expose and transfer carbon tissue, and how to develop the final print. Participants will leave with hands-on experience and a few original prints.

The carbon process will be introduced in its historic context, as well as with regards to its contemporary uses. The workshop is intended for anyone with an interest in learning this beautiful printing technique.

Materials Needed:
  • 4x5" or 5x7" negatives OR corrected images for printing digital negatives on CD or flash drive

Instructor:

Sandy King is a landscape photographer who prints exclusively with alternative processes including carbon transfer, kallitype, and palladium. He has conducted numerous workshops on carbon transfer printing both in the USA and abroad, including workshops in China, Canada, Mexico, Spain and Turkey, and is the author of The Book of Carbon and Carbro: Contemporary Procedures for Monochrome Pigment Printmaking, a self-published manual. He has also published numerous technical articles in both print and on-line journals.
