Pushing the Portrait

- Stretching the boundaries of portraiture outside the studio

Sarah Kaufman, Photography Classes and Workshops at Project Basho in Philadelphia PA
Sarah Kaufman
Description:

This workshop will focus on making portraits outside of the studio setting. We will seek to broaden our definitions of a portrait through a variety of contextual elements and tools and give consideration to the various layers of meaning included within the frame. We will explore traditional styles of portraiture as well as more open interpretations of the genre.

First, we will review the history of portraiture. Then, we will examine the work of contemporary artists whose work is stretching the boundaries of this genre.

Bring a portfolio of portraits to share (either prints or digital). We will spend a good part of the first Saturday looking at and discussing your own work. After discussing your images, we will come up with individualized assignments for the week. The second Saturday of this workshop, we will have a critique and share feedback about both your process and your new images.
