From lassos to healing brushes, and histograms to crop tools, this 4-week class introduces the student to the image-editing power (and fun) of Photoshop. The course will deliver a broad understanding of the core tools in Photoshop along with important introductions to digital imaging concepts like pixels, resolution, resampling, jpegs, color.

While Photoshop is a large and complex tool, the class will keep it simple by focusing on one tool and one technique at a time. Getting a solid grounding in the basics will help each student reach for more complex techniques in the future. Often the simplest solution is the best!

List of topics to be covered:

-Introduction to Adobe Bridge and file management
-Introduction to understanding pixels, resolution, and file types
-Basics of RGB color
-Basics of non-destructive color correction (ie: Levels, Curves, Brightness/Contrast)
-Understanding the histogram
-Introduction to using Art Layers and Adjustment Layers
-Basics of healing brush, clone stamp and red-eye tools
-Basics of making selections
-Introduction to basic masking
-Methods of converting from color to black and white

Materials Needed:
  • Your own digital images (camera or film scans) on jump drive or CD
  • Comfort with basic mouse skills (double-clicking, selecting, drag & drop)
Prerequisite: Basic Macintosh Knowledge, or Intro to Mac
Class Fee:
  • $260 + lab fee of $40
Instructor: Rick Wright (Day) practices and teaches photography as a malleable and sculptural medium. Though initially trained as a painter at Princeton and Columbia Universities (BA and MFA), he later studied at ICP in NY with John Loengard, Susan Meiselas, Danny Lyon, and Nan Goldin.

Rick shows his work locally and nationally. He is collected in several permanent collections, most recently added to the University of Pennsylvania's Collection. Wright has kept a studio in Philadelphia for the past 7 years and teaches photography at various venues including: Fleisher Art Memorial, Project Basho, Panasonic's Digital Photo Academy, as well as his own online classes and seminars.

Hinda Schuman (Evening) received her Masters of Fine Arts from the Tyler School of art and her Masters of Education from the Antioch Graduate School of Education. She is an instructor at various institutions and art centers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey including Drexel University, Stockton State College, Fleisher Art Memorial and the Abington Art Center among others. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States, and has also appeared in several publications.
