Rod Rutherland (Photographic Vision Color I, Spring '07)
Description: In this course we will explore the technical aspects as well as aesthetics of color photography as a tool for expression. The primary emphasis of the course will be how to take advantage of color as an additional visual element to create powerful images. We will delve into the connection of color to black and white photography, the similarities and differences, specific applications, and the historical contexts. Topics pertaining to the medium and history of color photography will be discussed through lecture and demonstration as well as through slide presentations highlighting both historical and contemporary photographers.

In the darkroom, the class will thoroughly cover the process of making color prints from negatives. The main emphasis will be placed on gaining an understanding of color theory and color correction throughout the class.

In addition to the in-class meetings, there will be occasional shooting trips and museum and gallery tours outside the class. Although these are not mandatory, students are highly encouraged to attend these extra sessions.

Materials needed: A 35mm SLR camera and 50mm lens
Films (Daylight balanced films from 100 to 400 ISO)
8x10 color paper (Fuji Crystal Archive Pro: Type C)
Negative sleeves (PrintFile 35-7B or equivalent is recommended)
Lee Print Viewing Kit
Prerequisite: Photographic Vision I or portfolio review
Fee: $400 + lab fee of $50
