Community & Support
In contrast to the façade, you will find a welcoming atmosphere when you walk inside our 90 year old building. Maybe you respond to the architecture of the space: the elegant curved walls, a long, arched hallway, and high ceilings. Or maybe you meet our helpful monitors and enthusiastic studio users and students who share a commitment toward photography. No matter what the reasons, there is a purposeful sense of community at Project Basho.
Since its inception, Project Basho has intended to create an active community of those who practice and appreciate the medium of photography, regardless of skill level. Initially, people became involved by participating in a class or workshop, or by renting the darkrooms.
Since the completion of the gallery space in fall 2007, we have extended the range of opportunities for participation through exhibition openings, a lecture series, movie nights, and Night for Emerging Photographers
Still, we want to reach out further. We would like to extend our community in a way that is practical, and that still holds value for those involved.
Thus, with pleasure, we are introducing Friends of Project Basho, our new membership program.
As always, you do not have to become a member to take advantage of our programs or use our facility. We will continue to offer events which are open to the public and free of charge, and will remain open to all interested in the medium of photography.
The membership program will, however, bring you and Project Basho something we all look forward to: deeper involvement in our various programs, a stronger community, and vital support for the organization. This program is about you as much as it is about Project Basho.
Membership will have a wider impact as well. We have always wanted to foster a culture around photography in Philadelphia. We are keenly aware that to achieve this goal, we need both an organization with commitment and vision, and active and educated participants. Membership is an invitation to join us and work toward this together.
