Project Basho houses an 800 sq. ft. gallery dedicated to the medium of photography. This space is one of few in Philadelphia that exclusively features photography. Unique architectural details and a 14 ft. ceiling create a gallery that is both spacious and intimate. Project Basho Gallery is a place where visually arresting photographs and educated viewers meet to celebrate the beauty, craft and vision of the medium.

ONWARD '09, annual juried photography competition by Project Basho, will feature 73 photographs by 69 emerging photographers and represent the variety of photographic processes used by contemporary artists, including traditional silver prints, digital output, and historical processes.

This year's judge was Peter Barberie, the Curator of Photographs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

This exhibition features serene landscapes with subtle sensibilities by Koichiro Kurita, a Japanese photographer residing in NY. The images in the show are from his long term project which focuses on basic elements of life: air, water, and earth. The show includes 19 platinum/palladium prints on handmade Gampi paper, ranging from 8x10 to 24x30 inches in size.

Shozo Tomioka: Images from Noto Peninsula, Images of lives of fishing villages from Japan in 1950's

This exhibition features 25 images of by Shozo Tomioka, a Japanese photographer from Kanazawa, Japan.

Made in the 1950s, his black&white images were created in the fishing villages of Wajima and its surrounding area. Influenced by Ken Domon, a prominent Japanese photographer of the same generation, Tomioka's keen eye for composition with a sense of geometry captures the harsh, yet lively and joyful, lives of the local people.

His two books will be available for sale: one book on images from Noto Peninsula (Ai no Kaze, $40) and the other on abstract study of the decay (Toki no Ato, $40). They are soft-bound and autographed by the photographer.

Time: Exhibition of Contemporary Collotype Prints, Photographs by Emmet Gowin, Eikoh Hosoe, Graciela Iturbide, Koichiro Kurita, John Pfahl, Ryuji Taira, George Tice, Auther Tress

In collaboration with FOTOSPHERE in NY and Benrido, Kyoto Japan, the exhibition will feature contemporary collotype prints. For this exhibit, Benrido has collaborated with eight photographers to create these collotype prints. The show is comprised of 20 modern collotype prints ranging from monochrome to full color images printed on fine art paper such as Gampi paper.
